BASKETBALL:

EWU women release 2023-24 schedule

CHENEY — Eastern Washington women’s basketball is gearing up for the new season and released its full 31-game 2023-24 schedule. The Eagles will play their first regular season home game at Reese Court on Nov. 16 and host Gonzaga on Nov. 29.

After an exhibition against Montana Tech on Oct. 29, the regular season begins on the road for the Eagles as they visit former Big Sky member Southern Utah Nov. 8.

They’ll host Corban University on November 16 to open a 14-game home schedule that includes five non-conference games, highlighted by back-to-back visits from Gonzaga (Nov. 29) and Boise State (Dec. 3).

Two of their road games will be in Las Vegas as the team will participate in the Vegas Holiday Hoops tournament, playing Wyoming (Dec. 21) and Presbyterian (Dec. 22).

The Eagles will compete in the inaugural Summit League Challenge, hosting Omaha Jan. 3 before traveling to play at North Dakota January 6. 

Eastern will begin its 18-game conference schedule on the road against Portland State Dec. 28. Big Sky play begins in Cheney on January 18 versus Weber State and the Eagles will host Idaho in a men’s and women’s basketball doubleheader on Feb. 10. Senior day is set for March 4 against Sacramento State. 

FOOTBALL:

Eagles receive votes in latest poll

CHENEY — The Eastern Washington Eagles, after a double overtime defeat against the reigning Mountain West Champion Fresno State Sept. 9, received votes in the latest Stats Perform PCS Top 25 media poll, as announced on Sept. 11.

Despite being winless in two outings, Eastern earned nine votes heading into their home opener on Sept. 16 in Cheney against No. 19 Southeastern Louisiana.

The Eagles, one of the premier teams in the entire FCS for the last decade-plus, were unranked coming into the season for the first time since 2007. They have been ranked in 136 of the last 156 national polls, highlighted by a 57-week streak that ended in 2015 and a 46-week streak that ended in 2019. The program has finished the season ranked 17 times since 1985.

The Big Sky Conference leads the country with six teams ranked, including four teams on Eastern’s schedule this year.

SOCCER:

Eagles fall to Broncos, Gaels

CHENEY — Eastern Washington women’s soccer lost a pair of non-conference matches, falling 6-3 to Saint Mary’s College, Sept. 10 and Boise State, 4-3. Sept. 7.

Senior Maddie Morgan had three goals against the Gaels as the Eagles scored twice in the second half after falling behind by three goals in the first half.

Against Boise State, Morgan scored two goals and Madison Kem converted a penalty kick in the 90th minute as the Eastern a rally fell short.

Eastern, now 1-6 on the season, travels to play UC Davis on Sept. 14 and Nevada Sept. 17.

VOLLEYBALL:

Eagles finish 2-1 at Portland tourney

PORTLAND — Eastern Washington won its final match at the Portland Tournament with a 3-2 victory over the host Pilots, Sept. 9 to improve to 4-5 on the season.

Kate Hatch ran the offense with 23 assists and had 19 digs for her fourth double-double of the season. Sage Brustad led the team with 15 kills with Kalista Lukovich finishing with 11.

The Eagles opened play Sept. 8 splitting its matchups with a morning win over Cal State Northridge, 3-2 before falling to Wyoming, 3-0 in the afternoon.

Against CSU-Northridge Brustad led all scorers with 17 kills, while Lukovich added 14. Hatch pitched in with 44 assists. Brustad recorded 12 kills and 10 digs for her sixth double-double of the season in the loss to Wyoming.

Eastern will be at Reese Court on Thursday, Sept. 14 to host cross-town rival Gonzaga at 6 p.m.
