Council starts regional opioid committee

CHENEY — The Council unanimously approved a resolution to allow the Mayor to sign a memo of understanding on behalf of the city for the establishment of an opioid abatement council for the West Plains.

“The long and short of this is that the city will receive some money to do some good to address the opioid crisis facing the country,” Administrator Mark Schuller said.

The text of Resolution F-172 said that the people of the State of Washington and its communities have been harmed by entities within the Pharmaceutical Supply Chain who manufacture, distribute, and dispense prescription opioids.

Local governments, including Cheney, through their elected representatives and counsel, are engaged in litigation seeking to hold these entities within the Pharmaceutical Supply Chain of prescription opioids accountable for the damage they have caused.

Prior to the distribution of any funds, participating local governments within an allocation region must establish an Opioid Abatement Council.

This resolution authorizes the Mayor to include a representative from Cheney on the abatement council.

“We will be polling the Council for anyone who is interested in serving on this council to represent the City,” Administrator Mark Schuller said.

“We have control of our own funds. What this group does is ensure that the spending is on approved programs and so forth. The four uses of the funds are treatment, prevention, education, and training,” Schuller said.
