Breakfast on the Roos draws large crowd

CHENEY - On Aug. 16 the West Plains Chamber of Commerce held their annual breakfast event on the famous red turf at Roos Field.

As guests were filling themselves with a hot breakfast, college leaders filled the air with motivating speeches.

Eastern Washington President Shari McMahan welcomed guests and said she is excited for the new academic year.

Eastern Washington University's new Athletic Director, Tim Collins provided some insight into his new role, his vision for Eagle athletics, and how he plans to build on the legacy of his predecessors.

Collins has only been in the office for three weeks, but he is already excited about the direction Eagle athletics.

"Right now, there's a lot of uncertainty a lot of challenging times in college athletics," Collins said. "But if we stay committed to our three areas of service, service to our student athletes, to our campus and to our community we'll hold on to our ability to hold the community together."

Collins brought the captains for this year's football team up to the microphone to answer a few questions and have them tell the community who they are briefly.

Efton Chism III spoke second and said he is grateful for the opportunities the college has put in front of him.

"The best part is the relationships I've built since I have been here," Chism said. "From my first year here to being up here with all of these guys has been a blessing."

The women's soccer team were introduced next, and they echoed similar thoughts to the crowd.

Head Football Coach Aaron Best was on site, and he spoke about how the athletic department goes the extra mile to help others. He also spoke of the goals moving forward.

"A lot of what these student athletes do as we all know is behind the scenes," Best said. "They are greeted by the greater public in terms of wins and losses."

"If they lose, they aren't very good and the coaches are terrible, but so many things they do behind the scenes go unseen," Best added.

This event brings a lot of area leaders together, and it is known to be a great opportunity to network, engage in insightful discussions and form lasting connections.
