Arts commission chooses design for first project

AIRWAY HEIGHTS – After a utility box in town gets swapped out later this Summer, it will be wrapped in local art.

The Arts Commission of Airway Heights has been working on an initial project that is meant to beautify the downtown area of the city.

As part of this downtown revitalization project, the commission has been seeking original designs created by area artists to cover a utility box located on the corner of S. Lawson Street and U.S. 2.

During the Aug. 14 commission meeting a design was chosen through the utilization of a scorecard.

The designs were judged based on artist residence and location, design format and whether or not the design fits into the overall theme of the project.

Ten artists submitted various designs, but during the two hour long meeting the design from a local Airway Heights artist was chosen.

Artist Missy Kupka submitted a design that highlights the wind and fields of golden wheat that are found across the West Plains.

This design won by a landslide with over 30 points separating the top design from the second-place art piece.

Some issues the commission ran into during the process is that some of the artists didn't live within the outlined area of the West Plains.

Another discussion brought to the table was the aspect of art generated through artificial intelligence. Some of the submissions received were generated in this manner.

The discussion led the commission to think about adding language into projects that would prevent art of that type to be considered.
