Local group jazzing up Airway

AIRWAY HEIGHTS – A Spokane based band that frequently plays community events will once again be gracing the stage Aug. 19 in Sunset Park for Airway Heights Day.

Alchemy has been seen and heard at events such as Cheney Mayfest, Medical Lake Founder's Day, and previously played Airway Heights Day.

According to Jim Brickey, the group's drummer, their goal is to create a relaxing musical environment for people.

"You know we just want to create a nice ambient environment that people can enjoy without being distracted," Brickey said. "We don't want to get on stage and make a big scene, but rather create a scene in which folks can still relax and enjoy their drinks or meal."

"We set that as our vision which helps us play in a lot of area restaurants," he added.

Brickey is joined by Nick Herman who sings and plays guitar. Herman started playing professionally at age 16. He has played with the Spokane Symphony Orchestra, the Coeur d'Alene Summer Theatre Company, and for many touring Broadway Shows at the Spokane Opera House.

The bass player is Will Mellott, and he cut his musical teeth playing jazz, and has performed in several contemporary Christian bands, jazz bands, show bands and blues bands.

Brickey began studying percussion in grade school and has played in numerous jazz bands, concert bands and rock bands in New York, Arizona and Colorado prior to moving to Spokane.

In 2014, Brickey and Mellott formed Alchemy.

They have grown to play shows in the Museum of Art and Culture along with other private events.

Along with the Jazz tunes, the group will also bring some easy listening light rock music as well.

According to Brickey, the band doesn't have goals of growing too big though.

"We don't really want to get big or nationally known," Brickey said. "We just want to be recognized in the area and bring people easy listening entertainment."

"We are continually asked to keep coming back to the venues we play. We want to keep that going because it's a realistic goal that fits our initial vision," he concluded.
