Airway Heights Day filled with festivities

AIRWAY HEIGHTS – The annual Airway Heights celebration is coming up quickly and starts Friday evening Aug. 18 and runs through Saturday Aug. 19.

The big kick off event is the annual watermelon race. Participants try to build the best racer they can and will face off in a series of races.

The biggest catch is that the winners will move on to the next rounds of the event, and the losers will get their melons smashed by the winners.

According to Andy Gardner the city just wants to bring people of the community together to enjoy some fun and unique games.

Prizes for the races will be awarded to the grand champions, both resident and corporate.

The best decorated racer will also be awarded along with the most innovative design.

Best team spirit and best crash will also be given recognition.

The event is meant to be a fun family friendly summertime celebration for the community.

There will be a live performance at center stage by Darla's School of Dance, local to Airway Heights.

Saturday will bring more games and festivities for visitors to enjoy.

Vendor tents will be set up throughout the day Saturday, and all vendor fees go to benefit the Airway Heights Kiwanis Club.

Inflatables from Kids Zone will be on site for the youth on Saturday as well along with carnival games.

The 2nd Chance Ranch from Spokane Valley will also have their mobile petting zoo on site for families to enjoy.

The Matadors Auto Club Car Show will be going from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. also, and part of the entry fees go to benefit the CARES non-profit Youth Recreation Scholarship Program.

A competitive cornhole tournament is on the schedule from noon to 3:00 p.m. and prizes will be given to the first and second place teams in each division. The tournament will follow American Cornhole Association rules and regulations.
