Turnbull offering special hikes

CHENEY – Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge is noted as an area spectacle for local hikers and outdoor enthusiasts.

Local photographers flock to the ponds and trails to find wildlife throughout the park, and each season brings something different. One thing visitors can almost always find is some birds.

One of the special events coming up at the park is happening August 18 from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. This is an early morning bird walk to specifically help people see and identify different birds on the refuge.

Anyone wanting to participate is asked to meet in the Turnbull headquarters parking lot the morning of the event.

More birds can be seen during the Spring and Summer months. Bigger birds like pelicans fly in for the warmer weather for park visitors to watch. Songbirds like the Red-Winged Blackbird can be heard throughout the park as well.

There are a lot of birds that nest through the year as well.

A couple of other hikes coming up are considered guided hikes, and those are informative hikes led by park rangers.

Hikers are encouraged to join for a pair of hikes at the Kepple Peninsula Trail parking lot. On September 9 and 23 there will be guided hikes along the specified trail from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and anyone interested is asked to meet at the trail parking lot.

October 7 and 21 will bring another set of hikes, these taking place at the Pine Lakes Loop Trail also from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Visitors are also asked to gather at the appropriate trail parking lot.
