EWU has 66 on BSC Spring Academic team

FARMINGTON, Utah — Eastern Washington University Athletics student-athletes performed well in the classroom to close out the 2022-23 academic year, with 66 earning Big Sky All-Academic honors. The Big Sky Conference announced its full list recently, with 641 student-athletes being named All-Academic for the spring from 12 universities.

Eastern’s 66 honorees ranks fourth in the Big Sky despite being one of only four full-time members that does not sponsor a varsity softball program. Weber State led all conference members with 95 student-athletes represented.

EWU women’s track and field placed 30 on the All-Academic team and is one of three teams in the conference to have 30-or-more student-athletes earning spots. Men’s track and field added 18 All-Academic selections.

Seven Eagles maintained a cumulative 4.0 GPA during the spring.

Eastern rounds out men’s basketball coaching staff

CHENEY, Wash. — Eastern Washington men’s basketball head coach David Riley announced on July 18 the hiring of two new assistant coaches and promotion of two existing staff members. Joining the Eagles will be Jerry Brown from the University of Denver and Donald Brady from Bellevue College while Ben Beauchamp and Blake Fernandez will take on new assistant coach titles.

“Our staff brings a well-rounded approach to the game and I’m excited to work with them,” said Riley. “We spend a lot of time with the players and I’m lucky I get to have these coaches around who can mentor the guys.”

Brown and Brady fill spots on the staff vacated by former assistants Mark Darnall and Arturo Ormond. Darnall is now the head coach at Jessup University in California while Ormond joined the staff at the University of Portland. Assistant coach Pedro Garcia Rosado remains with the Eagles in the same capacity.

Eastern women’s soccer schedule set

CHENEY, Wash. — The 2023 fall schedule is set for Eastern Washington women’s soccer and the team is ready to get back on the pitch.

The Eagles begin their season with a tough road contest against Pac-12 opponent Washington on Monday, Aug. 7. Eastern will open its home schedule on Thursday, Aug. 10 against Trinity Western (Canada).

“We are really pleased with how our 2023 schedule came together,” head coach Missy Strasburg said. It contains a great balance of quality teams from a number of different conferences that should challenge our team in different ways and prepare us well for a run at a Big Sky Conference Championship.”

The team plays nine games at home, with five non-conference and four in conference.

The non-conference schedule includes visits from Nebraska (Aug. 24), San Diego State (Sept. 3) and Saint Mary’s (Sept. 10). The Eagles will also travel to play Washington State (Sept. 17) and Boise State (Sept. 7) for the second consecutive season. 

Big Sky play opens on the road for Eastern, as they head to Pocatello, Idaho to face Idaho State on Sept. 21 followed on Sept. 24 at Weber State.

EWU’s first home conference game will be against Montana on Thursday, Sept. 28. 

In Strasburg’s second season leading the Eagles, the team went 2-3-3 in the Big Sky and 5-8-5 overall.
