Liberty Lake soapbox races

Races were held at Pavillion Park

LIBERTY LAKE - On July 8 a special race for special needs kids, hosted by the Spokane Valley Rotary, was held at Pavillion Park in Liberty Lake.

Each Racer was paired with a vetted and experienced driver for each race. The free event was open to the community and about 10 racers, in two heats, participated.

After the race, a free barbeque was held for participants and guests. Proceeds from the sponsors were donated to Joya and the HOPE School.

Jim Lusk, a long-time Rotarian who was announcing at the races, said that the pandemic stopped the races for a few years and that this race is the first one since the shutdowns.

"We only had two heats this time, whereas, in the past, we had up to six or eight, and many more racers. But it's been fun and we're looking forward to growing in the future," Lusk said.
