Cattlemen help feed hungry veterans

SPOKANE – Hungry veterans in Spokane Veteran’s Home can look forward to some home-cooked, beef-based meals for a while.

The Spokane County Cattlemen donated 1,100 pounds of ground beef to the center at 222 E. Fifth Ave. on June 6, organization President Jim Wentland said.

Wentland is the President of the Spokane County Cattlemen out of Medical Lake.

“We’ve been doing this for three years running,” Wentland said. “Overall, we’ve donated a couple thousand pounds to these folks to help them receive good hearty healthy meals.”

“This time, we partnered with the Lincoln County Cattlemen Association and Davenport Family Foods, and members of the Combat Veteran Motorcycle Club helped unload it.”

Wentland is known on the West Plains for his support of local farming, and the goal is no different in this case.

“We want to make sure the food and service we provide comes locally,” Wentland said. “That’s why we always donate beef that originates at St. Helens Farms in Washington. We just want to make sure we know where the food is coming from.”

Wentland said it also helps the facility, which provides services to more than 80 clients.

Wentland said he tries to keep the group as involved as possible and they participate in community events like Founder’s Day as well.

“It’s just good to get involved with community,” Wentland said. “We look forward to continuing this donation in the future and have one planned for later this fall.”
