Medical Lake Memorial Day event

MEDICAL LAKE — America’s war dead were honored during a solemn observance Monday, May 29, at the Washington State Veterans Cemetery.

The Memorial Day observance at 21702 W. Espanola Road, kicked off at 11 a.m. under sunny skies.

Approximately 500 people, including veterans and family members, were in attendance.

Cemetery Director Rudy Lopez gave the opening address in which he thanked the families of the fallen soldiers and introduced the guest speakers.

“Thank you for your unwavering commitment to this country, for your service to America,” Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-Spokane, said.

Spokane Mayor Nadine Woodward also offered remarks on the sacrifice of fallen soldiers and the significance of Memorial Day.

The Lilac City Community Band played an introductory musical score and other pieces throughout the event.

Army Col. Hank Cramer provided the keynote address on the value of recognizing the price of the freedom that Americans enjoy.

“If you want to thank a veteran, be the kind of American worth dying for,” Cramer said.

He encouraged the audience to reflect on the value of the sacrifices made by fallen soldiers.
