Medical Lake ousted in playoffs

MEDICAL LAKE - The Cardinal soccer season came to an end at the hands – well feet – of a familiar foe in the Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) Eagles on May 13.

Playing Lakeside for the second time in four days, Medical Lake lost 6-1 on the road at the middle school field and was eliminated from the playoffs in the fourth meeting this season between the teams.

The Cardinals (10-11) and Eagles also met in a May 9 match won by Lakeside, 5-1, and on May 11.

Andrew Cardon scored twice for Lakeside in a contest where they led 3-0 after the opening half.

Kaden Rudy scored Medical Lake's lone goal on a penalty kick in the 36th minute,

In the first meeting of the post-season with Lakeside, Sean Wilson scored three goals in succession - a natural hat trick - before Rudy answered in the 34th minute.

Sam Ornelas was team captain and a four-year starter.

Assistant coach Dan Collins said,. "He plays our sweeper position, a very important role in our formation."

"Matt Seigerman, he plays stopper, center mid, man-marker. He is our Swiss Army knife on the field," Collins wrote in an email.Junior Ethan Cruz's family is moving to Florida this summer.

Cardinal tennis players advance

MEDICAL LAKE - Girls tennis player Isabelle Rhoads took second in singles and advanced to regional play this weekend at Mead High School.

Kayden Mindermann made it to the semifinals but was unable to get a win to advance.

Josh Burt and Ryen Gibby took second in doubles while Mason Satko and Noah Young were fifth. Both doubles teams advanced to regionals.

The Medical Lake boys team took the Northeast A League title for the third year in a row.

Cheney girls wrap up season

CHENEY - The Blackhawks girls doubles team of Angelica Goold and Victoria Baycroft lost their tennis match Wednesday, May 10, making it to Day 3 of district competition.

The loss ends the girls tennis season.

The Blackhawks finished the season 5-8 overall and 2-7 in Greater SpokaneLeague play under first-year Coach Linnea Love.

Marquardt joins Eagles hoops

CHENEY - Emmett Marquardt, a forward out of Garfield High School in Seattle, has committed to the Eastern Washington University men's basketball program for the 2023-24 season, as announced by head coach David Riley on Friday.

"Emmett's skill and character fit our program perfectly," Riley said. "He can really shoot it, rebounds at a high level, and as he gets stronger, his skill level will show he can put it on the floor as well."

At 6-foot-8, Marquardt started for the 25-2 Garfield Bulldogs and was coached by former Portland Trail Blazer and University of Washington star Brandon Roy.

The stretch forward averaged 9.7 points and 10.3 rebounds in three games at the state tournament as Garfield earned the 2023 WIAA 3A Championship.

Eastern track wraps season

CHENEY - Eastern Washington wrapped up the track and field conference season Saturday, May 13 in Greeley, Colo., securing eight more all-conference top-3 finishes to bring their medal total up to 10 on the week.

That includes one gold and four silvers. As a team, both men and women finished 7th in the standings.

Hally Ruff and Savannah Schultz finished atop the field, needing a jump off to put Ruff in 1st and Schultz in 2nd as both cleared 4.13 meters.
