Cheney Congregational Church

CHENEY — The church is currently hiring a part-time Children’s Ministry Assistant, according to administrator Jenine Miller.

“We’re looking for someone who enjoys working with toddlers, and the time requirement is only two hours per Sunday morning.” Miller said.

On Thursdays from 1-2 p.m. the church is hosting a mid-week Bible study in collaboration with United Methodist Church on the gospel of Mark. Each Thursday in March the congregation will meet at the United Methodist Church.

Also on Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 1p.m., Meals on Wheels will be at the United Methodist Church offering a meals to seniors over 60 years of age.

The church welcomes the community to join them on Sunday mornings for in-person worship at 10 a.m. and fellowship time afterwards. Masks are optional. Children have their own “Discovery Team Time” during services.

Cheney Congregational Church has also started a free pantry outside the front doors of the church. “Please feel free to take or leave food for yourself and others.” Miller said.

“We are also involved with Feed Cheney for a free meal and grocery distribution which will be on Monday, April 24th at 5:30 at the Wren Pierson building in Cheney located at 615 Fourth Street. No documentation or demonstration of need required.” Miller said.

State Science Olympiad

CHENEY — Eastern Washington University hosted the annual Washington Science Olympiad on April 15, on campus, according to an EWU press release.

The university’s College of science, technology, engineering and math hoed this event that aims to improve the quality of K-12 education in the state and showcases the university’s math, science and engineering programs.

Several hundred middle and high school students competed in 50 events that touch on sustainability, the sciences, technology and astronomy.

Students who took part in the state tournament all advanced from regional competitions around Washington.

Winners of this event advanced to the national Science Olympiad tournament this May at Wichita State University in Wichita, KS.

Cheney Depot Society hold annual meeting

CHENEY — The yearly meeting of the Cheney Depot Society took place at the public library at 610 First Street on April 17.

This meeting is held to discuss the history of the program, the current progress of the project, he financial status, and an interior plans “sneak peak” for the members and attendees.

There was a question and answer section and an election of officers to two-year terms.

Cheney Book Club

CHENEY — The book club discussion meeting will be held on April 25 at 6:30 p.m. at the library at 610 First Street. The book to be presented will be The Other Einstein by Marie Benedict. The members of the club encourage the community to join them for what will be the second-to-last meeting this season.

Boy Scouts of America

Cheney Free Press

CHENEY — Boy Scouts of America Troop 356 meets on Tuesdays at the Community Church from 6:30 to 8 p.m. all year. Those interested in joining the scouts can sign up on line or come to a meeting, according to Assistant Troop Leader Kyle Ziemer.

Recently, this local troop contributed about three hours of community service work to the Cheney Clean Sweep effort.
