Medical Lake Middle School hosts cookie rally

MEDICAL LAKE – Girl Scout troops from all over the west plains and Spokane were represented at the middle school on Saturday, Feb. 11.

Brian Newberry, CEO of Girls Scouts of Eastern Washington and Idaho, gave a presentation on the strides in cookie sales the Girls Scouts of Washington have made in the past year.

Newberry introduced several scouts as they represented the several varietals of cookie, in costume, and lauded each for their contribution to their respective troops and sales areas.

"There are three primary things I want people to know about cookie sales." Newberry said. "First, when you but cookies from a scout, you are helping that individual girl achieve her goals."

"Second and third, are that we are growing in membership and that Washington Girl Scouts donated an estimated 10% of their overall sales to the military last year."

Newberry, a former commander of 92d Air Refueling Wing at Fairchild Air Force Base, says he is deeply committed to serving the community and the Girls Scouts organization.

Newberry's service area includes 19 counties across Washington state and 10 counties in northern Idaho.

"He also serves nearly 3,500 girls in kindergarten through 12th grade, along with a staff of 35 and 2,000 volunteers." Newberry's website states.

During the presentation, Newberry said that, even during the pandemic, cookie sales increased annually, "Beyond what I imagined."

As he cheered for the gathered assembly, Newberry reiterated his belief that it is the individual Girls Scouts that make the organization so successful, and thanked everyone for their continued work.
