Woman held in homicide

MEDICAL LAKE – A local woman is facing several criminal charges following a fatal shooting here on Friday, Dec. 23.

Cynthia B. Metsker, 24, is being held in the Spokane County Jail on $700,000 bond after being arrested Dec. 23 in connection with the slaying of Colin Bastow.

She was booked into the on charges of second-degree murder (intent to kill), first-degree unlawful possession of a firearm, fourth-degree assault, theft-city, third-degree malicious mischief-domestic violence, possession of a stolen motor vehicle, theft of a motor vehicle, first-degree theft (obtain/exert control) and first-degree no valid operator’s license.

Metsker is accused of shooting Bastow to death at an apartment complex near 227 S. Washington St., court records show.

At approximately 11a.m. Dec. 23, deputies received a report of a gunshot and screaming in the area of the apartment, records show. Deputies and other emergency responders converged on the scene and discovered a man, later identified as Bastow, with a gunshot wound.

Responders tried to stabilize Bastow, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, records show.

“Major Crimes Detectives and Spokane County Sheriff’s Office Forensic Unit Technicians responded to the scene to continue the investigation and process the scene for evidence,” a statement released by the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office said.

Court records show two apartments, Nos. 1 and 3, were connected to the shooting. Bastow was shot in apartment No. 1 and died in No. 3.

Deputies responding to the scene spoke with Metsker and a 16-year-old girl, whose name was not immediately available.

Records show the girl told law enforcement Bastow was trying to rape Metsker when she shot him. Metsker also told police Bastow was trying to rape her.

The girl told investigators that she heard a gunshot and saw Bastow run out the door to Apt. 3, where someone called 911, records show.

Colin is survived by his brother Hamish, who is raising funds to “cover his funeral and memorial expenses and attorney fees.”
