Cleone's Closet partners with Airway Heights

AIRWAY HEIGHTS – Cleone’s Closet, a food pantry on Sunset Highway, is partnering with the Rec center and municipal court to run a food and toy drive from Dec. 1-16.

The toys will be distributed through the facility at their main location at 13114 W Sunset Highway from 12p.m. to 2p.m. on Dec. 21. The food accumulated from the drive will be added to the general supply and distributed at the main facility Mondays and Fridays from 12p.m. to 2p.m.

Cleone’s Closet was started as a food pantry for the Women’s Healing Empowerment Network, a nationwide women’s network for survivors of sexual and domestic abuse, founded by Dr. Mable Dunbar.

Rachelle Jones, Manager at Cleone’s Closet, said “We work closely with the city when it comes to our give-away events and drives.”

Dunbar said “The city places collection bins at Grocery Outlet, at the Air Force Base, and the library. The residents and business owners throughout the city are very supportive with their time and energy.”

Savannah Youmans, the probation officer of the city and a member of the health and wellness board, said that the city’s goal in meeting an overall health and wellness model includes partnering with local charitable entities.

“The city is collecting the food and toys from the drive using collection bins at city hall and the rec center. More broadly, we connect members of the community who are experiencing food insecurity and other needs with Creone’s Closet.”

Hopefully, Youmans said, the city will be able to support this effort on an annual basis.
