Cheney swimmers back from 'tough' state meet

Cheney swimmers sent a number of swimmers to state competition Nov. 14 with notable outcomes.

Blackhawks’ head coach Jennifer Hochwalt insists that the 3A classification in the state of Washington is arguably to best around.

When, for instance, Cheney swimmer Joyalise O’Dell came away from competition at the King County Aquatics from the 200-yard Freestyle, her 20th, “Was still pretty well,” Hocwalt said of the 2 minute, 4.07 second time.

The 3A swimming ranks, particularly in the Puget Sound, are heavily populated with club teams that augment training well beyond the rest of the state.

O’Dell was part of a pair of relay teams from Cheney along with Sage Schaffer, Kate Kissell and Lauren Howe. The group finished 21st in a time of 1:47.08 in the 200-yard Free Relay and 22nd in the 400-yard Free Relay in 4:01.52.

“OK, we’re 21st which was actually exciting,” Hochwalt said. “Both the relays making state was a nice surprise.”

Howe earned an 11th place finish in the 50-yard freestyle, 24.69 and 15th in the 50-yard Freestyle, 24.93 as well as 14th in the 100-yard Freestyle with a 54.80.

Affiliated swimmer, Meghan Mix from Medical Lake finished 11th in preliminary competition in the 100-yard Freestyle at 59.36 and 18th in the 200-yard Individual Medley in 2:30.73. But as an alternate Mix was not able to compete further.
