Last updated 11/23/2022 at 12:41pm

CHENEY – A Cheney resident at 237 W 3rd St. allegedly called a crisis line help center in Spokane county with threats of self-harm, Nov. 16, and Cheney police responded.

Interim police chief Rick Bechtel said “Yesterday’s incident on 3rd St. was indeed resolved effectively with the assistance of the George Unit from Spokane Sheriffs office.”

Bechtel also commented on Cheney PD tactics for situations such as these. “We’ve always practiced deescalation at the Cheney PD, but we partner with Spokane county as well. They have what’s called George Units, and they can come out and help with mental health crises.”

“Our officers haven’t gone through specialized training but they have resources. We do keep up on our mandatory training of course, such as critical incident training.” Bechtel said.
