School boys invade girls dormitory at Monroe Hall in Halloween prank

The Cheney Normal School, a facility for the training of teachers, now the Normal School Heritage Center, was invaded by a group of 11 boys on this day in 1916.

The young men entered the girls dormitory by “unknown means” and began singing and whistling loudly. This alerted the residents of the building who went to investigate.

A girl reported to be Matron Kirk was found surrounded by the group of masked boys in a fright. The other girls rushed to assist her and unmasked the hoodlums.

The boys refused to leave and continued to terrorize the girls by running up and down the halls yelling. The girls overpowered and trapped one of the boys in a closet until President Showalter arrived.

The perpetrators were unmasked and identified by faculty.
