Cheney volleyball split a pair of Greater Spokane League matches last week defeating Ferris 3-1 (29-27, 26-24, 17-25, 25-18) at home Oct. 4 before losing 3-0 (12-25, 21-25, 24-26) at Ridgeline Oct. 6.
“We came out with high energy and fed off our home crowd,” head coach Heather Zorrozua wrote in an email. “We battled to pull off set one 29-27 and continued into set two with a final score of 26-24.”
“Watching our team start and maintain high energy and a competitive spirit was exciting,” Zorrozua said. “We had a bit of a setback in set three but were able to rally in set four to take the match with a 25-18 win.”
Navi Islam-Zwart had nine kills, while Haleigh Ghering had 29 assists for the Blackhawks (1-2 GSL, 7-3 overall). “Our standout was our libero, Sophie Coffin as she was all over the court,” Zorrozua said.

Cheney opened with 25-12 loss. Despite the setback Zorrozua sensed her team
gained confidence and strategy as the match continued.
Cheney led early but eventually fell 25-21 and lost the final set 26-24. “We battled hard but came up short,” Zorrozua said. Islam-Zwart led Cheney with 10 kills, while Ryann Robbins contributed six aces.
Cheney was home vs. University (0-3, 4-5) on Oct. 11 and travels to Mt. Spokane (3-0, 7-0) Oct. 13.
