Fire District No. 3 levy passes

Smiley, McMorris Rodgers favored by county voters

CHENEY – Voters in Spokane County Fire District No. 3 have approved the tax levy on the Aug. 2 primary election ballot.

Proposition No. 1 passed with 3,960 affirmative votes (53.48%) compared to 3,444 negative votes (46.52%).

The election results were certified by the county Canvassing Board on Tuesday, Aug. 16.

The measure was one of three fire district levies on the ballot in the county.

Fire District No. 4’s measure passed with 67.34% of the vote, while Fire District No. 13’s levy failed with a 62.33% no vote.

Spokane County elections officials reported a 40.28% voter turnout.

Of the 358,350 voters, 144,334 ballots were returned, officials said.

In other Spokane County results of the primary, political newcomer Tiffany Smiley of Pasco advance to the Nov. 8 general election ballot with 43.14% of the vote in her challenge of career politician Sen. Patty Murray, who captured 42.01% of the vote.

Statewide, Murray won the Senate primary race with 52.22%, based predominately on the Puget Sound vote.

Although Smiley finished a distant second with 33.69% statewide, she won 22 of the state’s 39 counties, including every county east of the Cascade Mountains.

Both advance to the general election.

Eastern Washington’s incumbent 5th Congressional District Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, walloped her opponents in the primary, winning 51.46% of the vote. Challenger Natasha Hill was second in the four-candidate field with 30.01%,

McMorris Rodgers won every county in the 5th Congressional District.

Her worst showing was in Spokane County, where McMorris Rodgers only received 48.52% of the vote, but still won by more than 22,000 votes.
