Student brings gun to Sunset Elementary

AIRWAY HEIGHTS – A gun was confiscated from a Sunset Elementary student on Monday, May 23, after showing it to another student on a school bus and others on school premises.

School Principal Kimberly Montecucco explained in an email to parents that two students reported the gun to an adult and that it was secured without incident or injury.

Montecucco reiterated the safety risks of having real or even fake weapons on school grounds.

“Weapons of any sort, even toy ones, on school premises or school-provided transportation pose extreme safety risks and violate district policy and state and federal law,” Montecucco said. “Please discuss with your children tonight the essential practice of “see something, say something.”

Montecucco also expressed gratitude for the quick thinking and acting of the school staff and administration and the responsiveness of local law enforcement.

“We are extremely thankful for our staff and administrative team as they acted quickly this morning, took control of the situation and contacted law enforcement,” Montecucco said. “We are also very grateful for our collaborative relationship with the Airway Heights Police Department and our YES officer who were onsite promptly to support and investigate today’s incident.”
