Looking Back Photo cutline December 23, 1971: Santa visits Cheney-Santa Claus and Captain Cy help Cheney Jaycees pass out candy to youngsters following the Christmas program of cartoons and entertainment by the "Youngtimers" in Cheney City Hall auditorium last Saturday. Over 150 youngsters turned out for the good time and received candy gifts, courtesy of the Chamber of Commerce. Issues and Mistakes

Five years after a portion of Minnie Creek was rerouted to make way for the Cheney Bi-Mart, the area is struggling to support the plants and wildlife that would make it a functioning wetland. The Cheney Planning Commission heard an update on recent efforts to improve the area at its Dec. 12 meeting. The Cheney Bi-Mart, at 2221 First St., was built in 2006 and 2007. The building's footprint overlapped with a section of Minnie Creek, so federal, state, and local laws required that the portion be relocated, or mitigated.
