Eastern student-athletes ring Salvation Army bells

CHENEY - It’s the season of giving and last week Eastern Washington University student-athletes partnered with the Salvation Army to try and raise some money for indigent families before Thanksgiving and Christmas.

The Salvation Army’s red buckets and bells are usually associated with Christmas. But this year marks their fourth annual Corporate Kettle Cook-off and the 130th anniversary of the red kettle campaign.

Eastern Athletics Director Lynn Hickey was on hand to welcome the community to Bi-Mart and champion the student athletes for giving their time to the misfortunate.

“We know a big part of our experience as a staff and for our students (at EWU) is to give back to our communities,” Hickey said. Athletes from the women’s soccer, men’s tennis and men’s basketball were present at Bi-Mart

This Thanksgiving the Salvation Army teamed up with Bi-Mart in Cheney and many other businesses around the Spokane area to raise money for families that are still recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic the entire world is still recovering from.

Eastern students helped raise $124.93 in 3.5 hours and the Spokane branch of the Salvation Army has a goal of raising $430,000 between all of Spokane and Stevens County which includes their Corporate Kettle Kick-Off Week sponsorships.
