Cheney wraps up accelerated sports seasons

CHENEY — The Blackhawks Season 3 (winter) teams wrapped up competition with some playoff action last week.

Boys basketball

They may have finished 0-12, but Cheney’s last game of the season was one of its better ones. The Blackhawks battled back from a 26-14 halftime deficit by outscoring Lewis and Clark 16-11 in the third quarter, only to fade down the stretch in a 63-50 loss in a Greater Spokane League 4A/3A consolation game June 16. The Tigers outscored Cheney 26-20 in the final eight minutes.

Josh Whiteley led Cheney with 19 points.

Earlier in the week, the Blackhawks dropped their playoff opener 70-45 to Ferris. Whiteley led Cheney with 16 points.

Girls basketball

The Lady Blackhawks dropped both playoff games last week, getting blitzed 51-22 by eventual GSL champion Central Valley on June 15 and then losing 68-52 to Lewis and Clark in the game for third-place June 17.

Cheney started slow against CV and never found its offensive rhythm, trailing 15-1 at the end of the first quarter and 27-7 at the half. Makenna Benson had seven points to lead the Lady Blackhawks.

A slow start proved to also be Cheney’s downfall against the Tigers two days later. LC jumped to a 24-12 first quarter lead and never looked back, despite Cheney playing them fairly evenly – outscored 44-40 – over the next three quarters.

Benson again led Cheney with 10 points, nine coming on three, 3-pointers. Emma Evans added nine points as the Lady Blackhawks finished the season in fourth-place, 4-3 in GSL action and 4-8 overall.

Slowpitch softball

The Lady Blackhawks earned a split in post-season play, edging East Valley 6-5 in their opener but falling 12-2 to University in the game for fourth place.

Bella King led Cheney against the Knights, going 2 for 3 with two RBIs. Ashlynne Scott also had a pair of hits while earning the win in the pitching circle.

The Titans pounded out 19 hits in their win over Cheney. Parker Cagle had a pair of singles to lead Cheney’s six-hit attack.

Cheney finishes the season in fifth place, 6-5 in GSL competition, 7-6 overall.
