Cardinal girls are even for the week

MEDICAL LAKE — League leading Freeman got untracked in the second quarter on the way to 43-30 Northeast A League girls basketball road victory June 2.

The Cardinals salvaged a split with a 48-34 win, June 5, at home against Riverside to even their record at 3-3. A contest at Deer Park was cancelled due to concerns with COVID.

“We played much better this time but couldn’t get the win,” head coach Kyle Lundberg wrote in an email, referencing his team’s 52-29 loss May 27.

After trailing 7-6 in the first quarter, Freeman got into double-digit scoring the remainder of the game with the Scotties’ second and third quarters deciding it. Freeman led 17-11 at the break and pushed that edge to 28-16 entering the final period.

Ellie Haas led Medical Lake with 10 points and got kudos from her coach for playing solid defense.

Emma Maxwell scored 18 to lead her team, 12 of those points coming from 3-point range. “Charde Luat had eight steals to help us out on the defensive side,” Lundberg said.

Medical Lake plays against Lakeside (June 7), at Riverside (June 9), at Colville (June 10) and home vs. Deer Park (June 11). The season will conclude next week with final games, plus a league tournament coming after graduation.
