MEDICAL LAKE — Wins at the beginning and end of the week gave the Medical Lake girls’ basketball team a split in a very busy stretch of Northeast A League games.

The Cardinals began with a 49-39 victory at Lakeside May 24, followed that with losses May 26 and 27 at Deer Park (42-29) and at Freeman (52-29) before a home win 47-27 vs. Newport.

Amblessed Okemgbo and Charde Luat each had 12 points in the Lakeside win while Emma Maxwell added 11.

Against the Stags the Cardinals had two quarters of absent offense, scoring just three points in the first and two in the third. Otherwise this might have been a different outcome as Medical Lake won both the second and third periods.

“We played pretty well but had a tough third quarter scoring that made it difficult to make a comeback,” head coach Kyle Lundberg wrote in an email. “Emma Maxwell played a great game and kept us close with her 14 points.”

In the Freeman game there was a similar power outage as at Deer Park, only this time it was worse as ML was shutout. Ellie Acord led her team with 13 points.

Medical Lake played its first home game vs. Newport, racing to a 25-13 halftime lead and were not threatened afterwards. Tyana Newman was leading scorer with 14 points in her first game back since an injury. Maxwell had 13 points.

The Cardinals reverse the trend of road games by hosting Freeman (June 2), Deer Park (June 2) and Riverside (June 5).
