Blackhawks FBLA qualifies 18 for state

CHENEY — The high school Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) competed in at the 2021 virtual Northeast Regional Winter Conference in early February. According to news release, the Blackhawks had all 18 attending members place in the top six.

As a team, club members placed 51 times in the competition. Students who place in the top six are eligible to compete at the virtual State Business Leadership Conference in April.

Of the 51 different times that we placed, Cheney High School had 19 first place finishes and seven second place finishes.

“The Winter Conference event window opened on Jan. 30 and allowed a lot of our members to come to Cheney High School to safely compete together as a team,” Blackhawks FBLA adviser Adam Smith said in an email.

Highlights for Cheney included: seniors Steven Johnson with four first-place finishes and Hope Schneider with three first-place awards in five different events. Johnson was first in Computer Applications, Database Design, Electronic Career Portfolio and Management Information Systems while Schneider was first in Banking & Finance, International Business as well as Management Information Systems.

Smith said that also having a great conference was sophomores Jason Hatfield, who placed five times with four firsts, Nia Guest with four places — all firsts and Mika Corneil, four places with three firsts. Hatfield earned firsts in Cyber Security, Introduction to Information Technology, Political Science and Introduction to Spreadsheet Applications; with Guest’s firsts in Introduction to Business, Organizational Leadership, Public Service Announcement and Publication Design and Corneil’s firsts in Introduction to Business Communications, Public Service Announcement and Publication Design.

Also qualifying for Cheney are Connor Barsness (one first), Brent Belsby, Tenaya Belsby (two firsts), Will Emert, Keenan Hahn, Skylar Hanson (three firsts), AC Hinton, Emme Murray, Joaquin Mendoza, Charlie Rajewski, Beckett Schoenleber, Ben Schreiber (one first) and Cameron Teresi (one first).

Qualifiers from the Winter Conference are headed to the state conference and students who place top four in the state qualify to attend the virtual national conference on June 28-July 3.

This regional event was attended by 15 different local high schools and had 206 students in attendance.
