Construction closures impending at I-90/Medical Lake interchange

MEDICAL LAKE—Those planning to head to Medical Lake this weekend may want to plan an alternate route to avoid construction occurring at the State Route 902/Medical Lake interchange off Interstate 90.

The eastbound off-ramp at Exit 272 off I-90 will close Oct. 2 at 7 p.m. through Oct. 5 at 5 a.m. Additionally, a single lane of I-90 will close Oct. 3 from 3:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., according to a press release provided by Beth Bousley of the Washington State Department of Transportation.

The eastbound off-ramp closure will occur so crews can pave the off-ramp and a new roundabout at the ramp terminal. During this closure, eastbound traffic will be detoured at Exit 270 and directed to head north on Craig Road, which meets with Highway 902 at another roundabout, the press release states.

Traffic is already being directed due to construction, which is part of WSDOT’s I-90-Medical Lake/SR 902 Improvements project. The project includes reconstruction of the eastbound and westbound terminals and the addition of roundabouts at those terminals. The westbound roundabout has been constructed, with another roundabout at the intersection of Highway 902 and Geiger Boulevard.

Later construction will include a bridge structure parallel to the overpass over I-90.

Presently, Temporary bypass lanes are shifting traffic around the roundabout at the intersection of the eastbound I-90 ramps and Highway 902. The bridge barrier is being formed, and curbing, signage, and electrical components are being installed at the intersection south of I-90, the press release states.

The closure is part of the $15.85 million State Route 902/Medical Lake project. Begun in June 2019, the project includes a new I-90 overpass parallel to the existing bridge along with two new roundabouts on the west side of the interchange that also connects Geiger Boulevard to SR 902.
