Airway Heights accepts, spends, $50,000 grant

AIRWAY HEIGHTS — The Airway Heights city council voted unanimously earlier this month to accept a $50,000 grant from the state of Washington. Minutes later, the council voted to apply the grant as a payment to an existing project.

The grant was authorized by the Washington State Legislature as part of a program that provides funding of up to $50,000 to small cities to increase opportunities for housing.

City planner Heather Trautman presented the grant to the council and requested that it accept it. “No matching of funds in required by the city,” Trautman told the council.

According to Trautman’s printed presentation, “…cities may apply under this grant to use funds for the development of several options including: code changes that increase the opportunity for housing, a sub-area plan, or a housing action plan.”

The city’s application stated the grant would be used to complete the Downtown Sub-area Plan, implement development standards for the Highway 2 Commercial corridor and increase the thresholds for a short plat from 4 lots to 9 lots.

The state approved the city’s application.

The council then voted to apply the $50,000 to an existing contract with SCJ Alliance to complete the above-mentioned work. The funding allows completion of a contract that was originally signed in 2017.
