Apartments may be coming to your single-family home neighborhood

Substitute Senate Bill 6536 would require zoning laws to change

OLYMPIA – Larger cities and counties would be prohibited from creating single-family neighborhoods under a Senate Bill introduced by a King County Democrat.

Substitute Senate Bill 6536 would require cities of more than 10,000 residents and counties with 50,000 residents to eliminate residential zoning rules limiting construction to single-family homes.

Sen. Mona Das, D-Kent, wants to eliminate single-family neighborhoods in cities and in urban growth areas of counties.

Under her bill, counties would be required to allow duplexes, townhouses, condominiums and apartment complexes of 12 units or less to be constructed in traditional single-family home neighborhoods.

Cities with more than 15,000 residents would be required to change zoning laws this year to allow apartments to be built. Cities with more than 10,000 residents would have to make the change in 2021, under the bill.

The bill has been sent to the Senate Rules Committee for second reading.
