West Plains residents traveling down Highway 2 in Airway Heights may have noticed significant construction in the area, but city officials say the project will be relatively short -lived.
The Washington State Department of Transportation project is a safety improvement meant to restrict left turn movements in the corridor between Hayford and Deer Heights roads, except for a westbound left turn onto the northern properties near Starbucks and an eastbound left onto Hazelwood.
“There was a motorcycle fatality there a few years ago and they finally got the money and time to address it,” Airway Heights Public Works Director Kevin Anderson said. “They’ll be putting up curbage and signage.”
The project takes place between Airway Heights and Spokane, making it a joint project, though Anderson said “Spokane is really driving the boat.”
“What we want to do as a city is come back in after they’re done and landscape it,” Anderson said.
The project is in its first phase, slated to last between three and four weeks, Anderson said.
An open house discussing the project was held Tuesday, April 16. Right on the heels of its completion will be another city transportation project, the construction of a Deer Heights Road roundabout.
“It is probably going to make life inconvenient for some people,” Anderson said.
