Airway Heights training chief heads to District 3

The Airway Heights Fire Department will have to say goodbye to one of its own at the end of this month, as training chief Alex Turner leaves for a captain's position with Spokane County Fire District 3 (SCFD3).

"It's bittersweet," Turner said of the move. "I wasn't looking to move or leave the firefighting family here in Airway Heights, but it's an opportunity for me and my family at home."

Turner has been with the Airway Heights department for about five years, but will join SCFD3 as one of its first-ever captains.

Due to significant growth in the region, the district opened three captain positions in November. According to the job posting, the captains will assist with leadership and guidance of personnel and will act as a liaison between firefighters and upper department staff.

Eventually, the captains will be a part of station staffing as well, Turner said.

"I got my start at District 3 as a volunteer and then as a resident for two years, so in a way it's kind of like coming home," he said.

Turner's last day in Airway Heights is Jan. 24. He starts in his new position with SCFD3 at the beginning of February.
