Residents at Pine Lodge Correctional Center for Women celebrated receiving their GEDs at a graduation ceremony held at the Department of Corrections' facility in Medical Lake. The women were part of a class of 29 residents receiving their certificates through Community Colleges of Spokane in front of family, friends, several keynote speakers and staff.

Cheney's Kafka Coffee officially became Tully's Coffee, ending a five-year business run for the popular restaurant. It was located on the ground level of Eastern Washington University's Brewster Hall, 410 Second Ave. in downtown Cheney.

Medical Lake Fire Department Fire Chief Bryan Musser promoted Jeff Estes to department captain after two years of service to the city's all-volunteer department, with one of those spent as a lieutenant.

April 16, 1998

A First Street business stood temporarily empty after police busted an illegal kegger in its basement. The Next Generation Dance Studio, which was opened by Kim York and Larry Lentz, hosted the late-night party, which York said was meant to be a non-alcoholic dance party. However, at about 1 a.m., police arrived after a complaint from a neighboring business.

The Cheney Planning Commission braced themselves for a lively public hearing about the proposal to expand the membership lodging overlay zone.

The Cheney Blackhawks baseball team was tied for the top spot in the Frontier League with East Valley.

April 14, 1988

The hunt for a new superintendent to direct the Cheney School District was entering its final phase. Three candidates, James Jungers, David Ross and Bill Tilley, were interviewed.

Dr. Frank Borelli, vice president for student services at Eastern Washington University, accepted the position of vice chancellor for student affairs at Indiana University/Purdue University at Fort Wayne.

The top placer for Cheney High School at last weekend's prestigious Pasco Invitational track and field meet was senior Steve Emtman, who finished second in the discus.

April 13, 1978

While the old Cheney Care Center nursing facility fought to stay open long enough to transfer approximately 20 elderly residents to a new site, the non-profit association seeking to build a new 60-bed Care Canter vowed to carry on regardless of what the future holds for the 505 Second St. operation.

Hoping to lay two transmission lines to a two million gallon reservoir and constructing a pump house for its recently drilled well near Espanola, the city of Medical Lake may settle for hooking up the new well to existing lines. The state Department of Social and Health Services had reportedly run out of well funding.

April 12, 1968

Spokane County commissioners signed a lease to rent from Frank Bunker the restaurant and living quarters building adjacent to the former Bunker's Resort on Fish Lake.

The Medical Lake School District board of directors announced the hiring of Byron E. Leeper as superintendant of schools. He would replace W.A. Huff, who had served since 1954.
