Storms struck the Inland Northwest that made for dangerous driving conditions and caused area schools to close. Snowstorms also caused widespread power outages to about 3,550 Medical Lake residents. The West Plains recorded over 12 inches over a weekend with more to follow.

Marissa Wunderlich opened up a Cheney masseuse shop called "Cheney Sun Shop and Tanning Salon." The business was located at 2730 First St.

Cheney Mayor Allan Gainer spoke before an audience of about 50 at the Wren Pierson Building where he provided his outlook on the issues affecting the city and residents.

Feb. 5, 1998

After nine days of orbiting the earth, Cheney High School graduate Michael Anderson and his fellow Endeavor Space Shuttle astronauts returned home.

Seven Cheney High School students took their vocal talents to Yakima, having been selected for the prestigious all-state choir. Those selected were seniors Ryan Davies, Terry Simmons and Jared Chacon; juniors Dustin Klinkenberg and Jennifer Davis; sophomore Emily Burr and freshman Joe Lienhard.

With just three games to play in the regular season, the Cheney Blackhawk boys basketball team set their sights on claiming the No. 1 berth into the Frontier League district playoffs.

Feb. 4, 1988

Members of the Cheney School Board started the process of finding a replacement for retiring Superintendent Gale Marrs.

Construction bids for the new Cheney community library came in at $418,000. Tom Richardson, the chair of the library committee said it was originally estimated that the new building would cost $400,000.

Medical Lake School District students scored above the state average in every category of every grade level test on the Metropolitan Achievement Test.

Feb. 2, 1978

"Taxi Driver," a Cannes Film Festival award-winner two years ago was shown at the Pence Union Building on Eastern's campus.

The Medical Lake School District had to trim three teachers from its staff to do it, but for the third straight year only $150,000 was requested in special levy funds, according to Superintendent Clayton Dunn.

People soon would have access to a clothing bank in Cheney as members of the Community Service Council had discussed the need for a repository for used clothing.

Feb. 1, 1968

Four Cheney High School wrestlers-Fred Goodwin, Steve Pear, Roger Goodwin and Lonnie Sanders-finished the regular season with undefeated records.

Miles Batt was installed as president of Medical Lake High School Associated Student Body. Other officers were Wray Beth Johnson, vice president; Linda Glasgow, secretary; Debbie Mount, treasurer; and Kevin Free, sergeant at arms.

Elvern Garber was dismissed as superintendent of Lakeland Village. He expressed surprise and would appear to the State Hiring Board.
