Medical Lake citizens and local developers clashed over a proposed rezone before members of the Planning Commission during a near three-hour public hearing.

The timeline for the realignment phase of the Geiger Spur rail line was pushed back several months as Spokane County officials sought nearly $2 million in extra funding from the state legislature for new material.

Tammie Schrader, a seventh grade life science teacher at Cheney Middle School was presented a $2,000 award from Pend Oreille Services, as part of the "Unsung Heroes" program.

Oct. 9, 1997

Williams Lake, located about 10 miles south of Cheney, had the possibility to get the sewer service it had hoped for since 1974.

Body Language Tattoos opened in Cheney. The business was located at the historic Old Fellows Building at 327 First St.

The Medical Lake football team improved to 3-1 overall with a 49-6 win over Newport.

Oct. 8, 1987

Students entering the Cheney public school system were having a long educational road ahead of them. The district was putting kindergartners through an intensive testing program that checked language, visual and gross motor skills and development.

A pair of Medical Lake High School seniors, Steve wolf and Eric Niles, were selected as semi-finalists in the National Merit Scholarship.

For the first time ever, Cheney swimmers competed as high school varsity athletes.

40 Years Ago

Oct. 6, 1977

When Hollman Drilling Corp. got through finishing construction on a 2,132-foot well in Cheney, their next step was to drill a 1,100-foot deep well near Medical Lake. The well site, located three and half miles west of the city near Espanola Road was expected to deliver a combined 25,000 gallons per minute when completed.

Cheney's junior high FFA program came under scrutiny by the state Superintendent of Public Instruction Office over extension pay requirements covering organizational efforts.

Medical Lake town administrator Mike McCurdy spoke about the town government temporary operations out of a trailer and offices at the utility building.

50 Years Ago

Oct. 5, 1967

Bob Wilson, Cheney building contractor, was associated with Carter Lewis Realtors and had an office in the Red Barn building. Wilson had built 100 houses in Cheney in the past five years.

At the annual Harvest Ball in Medical Lake, Charlene Rider was crowned the queen.

The Airway Heights City Council met and adopted the 1968 budget for the town.
