Medical Lake’s City Council unanimously approved an emergency ordinance placing a temporary suspension on all incoming development applications while officials examine options for developing land use regulations to ensure continued availability of the city’s water supply.

Students at Eastern Washington University carried cardboard coffins in memoriam of U.S. service men and women killed in the Iraq War in a silent protest demonstration on campus.

An accident on Sixth Street near Cheney High School sent one student to the hospital as a precautionary measure and left one vehicle totaled.

20 Years Ago

May 1, 1997

Dick Lee, owner of Bill’s Tavern, presented Jim and Dodie Canaday of Jim and Dodie’s Silverworks with money collected at Bill’s and the Saddle Inn. The donations were to help the Canaday’s who were burglarized last fall and lost over $30,000 of merchandise.

Eleven Medical Lake teachers spent three days with just one task. They poured through lists and lists of questions, selecting just the right ones as they designed their own reading assessment.

The Cardinal boys’ tennis team continued to torment its league peers, cruising to a big 6-1 win over Lakeside and a 6-1 smashing of the Freeman Scotties.

April 30, 1987

Bob Silder, editor of the Cheney Free Press for two years ended his reign. Replacing him as editor was Kevin Hanson.

Area farmers had a new place to buy feed and Cheney had a new home and garden store, with the opening of Cheney Farm and Home Center.

40 Years Ago

April 28, 1977

Decisive action to call in municipal aid from Spokane and Spokane County Fire District 3 may have prevented buildings surrounding EWU fieldhouse on Washington Street from going up in flames. A fire started by a welder’s torch soon engulfed the old structure, which was under demolition at the time of the blaze.

Three armed men robbed Farmers and Merchants Bank of $6,906 and fired several shots at Police Sgt. Jim Reinbold. The suspects left the bank at a high rate of speed and were pursued by Reinbold; shots hit the sergeant’s car seven times.

50 Years Ago

April 30, 1967

“Spring Time Reflection” was the theme for Medical Lake’s community float that was entered into the Wenatchee Apple Blossom Parade.

Mr. and Mrs. Grover Black were opening their A&W Root Beer stand on First and Pine streets, across from the Pinehurst Motel.
