March 15, 2007

Washington State Patrol received a 911 call of a vehicle traveling at over 100 mles per hour westbound on Interstate 90 near Spokane/Lincoln county line. The driver, 34-year-old Brian Gourgeois was initially placed under arrest for reckless driving. The passenger and registered owner of the vehicle, 39-year-old John Popper, was placed under arrest for drug possession. Troopers recovered a total of 14 weapons and a small amount of marijuana along with a pipe.

Donna Grant and Dee Cook of Medical Lake opened up a new business called D&D Residential and Commercial Cleaning Service. They were known in the community as head managers of Denny's Harvest Foods deli and bakery before opening their own business.

With a crowd awaiting the event, the Cheney Library reopened after being under construction.

March 20, 1997

Cheney High School graduate Michael Anderson was told he would journey to the stars next year. Anderson, a NASA astronaut was to ride aboard the space shuttle Discovery to a docking with Russia's space station.

Don Millard celebrated a three-year anniversary with his store Blues and Cards Headquarters in Airway Heights. The store was the only store of its type within 500 miles, with the shop including baseball cards, guitars and blues music on the shelves.

The Cheney Blackhawks boy's basketball team played four games in the Tacoma Dome, leaving most other teams envious of their success. The team had advanced to the championship final against O'Dea, but lost 59-46.

March 19, 1987

The Medical Lake City Council voted unanimously to support the site chosen for the waste-to-energy plant and authorized Mayor George Ramsey to vote for the site at the next Coalition of Cities meeting.

Cheney High School's boys basketball team ran into a familiar opponent at the state AA basketball tournament in Seattle as the Blackhawks opened for the second year in a row against Olympia and lost by one. Cheney lost to Olympia 58-40 in 1986 in the quarterfinals.

March 24, 1977

Janni Rene Thompson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Duane Thompson was crowned the 1977 Cheney Junior Miss.

Although some legislative roadblocks had been sighted, the proposed change of name for Eastern Washington State College to Eastern Washington University officially had enough support to become a reality.

The Airway Heights Town Council voted to pay $19,390.95 for the contract on the recently completed town garage shop.

50 Years Ago

March 23, 1967

Clarence Kelley was elected president of the Cheney Jaycees at the group's meeting. Other new officers were: Dale Plumb, internal vice president; Dave Eychaner, external vice president; Wilmer Ditton, secretary; Wayne Webber, treasurer and Gary Wallingford, state director.

Cheney High School wrestling coaches were honored with a surprise party, which was attended by more than 100 people. Master of the ceremonies Ted Stahlborn presented a biography of coach Eldon Engel.
