The Cheney Planning Commission gave its final, official approval to the construction of a new self-storage facility on Andrus Road between First Street and Cheney-Spokane Road.

New Fairways golf course owner Buster Heitman and his wife Laura formed West Terrace Golf, LLC, to purchase the 144-acre 6,541-yard course from absentee-owner Charles Klar of Scottsdale, Ariz.

The Spokane Tribe of Indians got the state Gaming Commission’s 6-3 approval of a gaming compact, which would regulate the number of slot machines the tribe can operate at its two casinos.

March 6, 1997

Cheney High School graduate, Michael Anderson was preparing to go into space. The graduate went to the University of Washington then Creighton University, then to Air Force flying school, then finished at NASA in training for the opportunity.

Julie Schmelzer headed a list of 15 Eastern Washington Racing Association swimmers who competed in the “B” championships at the Eastern Washington University pool. Schmelzer was the highest-point winner in the girls’ 15-18 class, taking titles in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard butterfly, 100-yard breaststroke, 200-yard backstroke and the 400-yard individual medley.

The Medical Lake boy’s basketball team was state bound after 45-43 a victory over Chewelah for the districts No. 2 state seed.

Cheney High School senior Jason Kent signed a letter of intent to play football at Oregon State University.

Femme Munn took over the position of principal at Blair Elementary School.

The Cheney Chamber of Commerce’s annual Farmer Night Dinner featured Bruce Tainio, president of Tainio technology and Technique Inc.

Mar. 10, 1977

Vandalism to parks and the Cheney Parks and Recreation Department facilities cost taxpayers over $1,000, most of that bill was due to the destruction of Central Business District trees.

Debra M. Crowe, 21, remained in critical condition with fractured ribs and pelvis along with abdominal, internal and chest injuries in Spokane’s Deaconess Hospital after being involved in a three-vehicle accident about two miles east of Cheney on Highway 904.

Mike Reed provided the pivotal victory for the Eastern Washington State College to help the Eagles wrap up their first NAIA national wrestling title.

Mar. 9, 1967

The Cheney Jaycees chose Dale Plumb as February’s “Jaycee of the Month.”

School Board chairman Carmen Stewart invited all residents of the area to attend a brief ceremony and open house in the new Cheney High School.

Niel Hurd, a well-known Rockford merchant and longtime member of the Rockford Lions Club, was the featured speaker at the 20th anniversary observance of the Cheney Lions Club.
