Cheney City Administrator Paul Schmidt stepped down after 20 years of service to the city — first as its public works director and for the last seven years as its administrative head.

A one-car collision at the intersection of West First Street and Cheney-Plaza Road interrupted power for over 400 customers. Cheney resident Frederick W. Crisson, 51, was attempting to make a left turn from West First on to Cheney-Plaza but went over the curb and struck a railroad sign before crossing the road again, slamming into a power line and downing it.

The Exxon Mobil Educational Alliance Program awarded Medical Lake High school a $500 grant that will assist the school’s technology programs.

Oct. 31, 1996

A Cheney High School teacher was allowed by the court to stay in the classroom if he follows guidelines given out by the judge after being arrested last spring for assault. The teacher allegedly pushed a Cheney soccer player off the bench in the locker room and preceded to hold him around the neck, yelling profanities.

Cheney Middle School changed their mascot from Tommy the Trojan to Nellie the Nighthawk.

30 Years Ago

Oct. 30, 1986

Cheney was represented in both the boys’ and girls’ state tennis tournaments. In boys’ play, it was the team of Bob Austin and Bruce Shreeve. Advancing to state in the girls’ bracket were Anne Hayes and Cinnamon Alnutt.

Medical Lake Fire Chief Bud Revill and the rest of the volunteer department spent time learning about the special equipment and other aspects of their new fire truck.

40 Years Ago

Oct. 28, 1976

Dr. H. George Frederickson, 44, dean of the College of Public Community Services at the University of Missouri, became the new president of Eastern Washington State College.

The next governor of the state of Washington was in Cheney. The Republican candidate John Spellman and Democratic Dixy Lee Ray visited.

Cheney High sophomore Jay Martin set a new course record as he blitzed the 2.5-mile course in 13:11, beating his old record by five seconds.

50 Years Ago

Nov. 4, 1966

The undefeated Cheney Blackhawks captured the Northeast A League title with a 23-7 win over Medical Lake.

An auxiliary to the Medical Lake Post 196, American Legion, was formed.

EWSC’s enrollment was up to 509 students over the fall quarter. Don Mason, the registrar at the school, said the fall’s enrollment was up to 4,167.
