Cheney’s City Council took two steps towards increasing the city’s size by approving an agreement and resolution to annex the McCardle property, 37 acres of land located north of Betz Road and west of Murphy Road in north Cheney.

A 19-year-old Cheney resident, Kristina Hines, who volunteered for the Mount Spokane Ski Patrol, received a silver merit star for the 2005-06 National Outstanding Student Patroller Award. She was chosen out of 650 ski resorts in the United States.

The Cheney swimming team ran its season mark to 3-2 with a pair of wins over Clarkston and Selah.

Oct. 24, 1996

Several Cheney City Council members expressed concern over some seemingly “missing” funds in the account the council had set up to hold money for the clean up of the Marshall Landfill.

Over 100 West Plains residents congregated at Hallett Elementary School in Medical Lake to show their opposition to the recently proposed Brooks Road landfill project.

Junior Jeannette Zimmer broke the Cheney High School record in cross country with an 18 minute, 59.3 second 3-mile time in a double-dual meet with West Valley and East Valley.

Oct. 23, 1986

Members of the five Cheney chapters of Beta Sigma Phi demonstrated support for a new Cheney branch library by handing out leaflets to local residents.

Medical Lake City Council ran into their first public opposition to its proposed recreational vehicle park. Marshall Shapiro of Connie’s Cove Resort told the council that it looked like the city is trying to take business away from local resorts by building the RV Park.

Cheney High School boys’ and girls’ cross country and tennis teams finished their regular season with wins as the Hawks prepared for state-qualifying action.

Oct. 21, 1976

The Citizens Advisory Committee of the West Plains selected the Fancher Butte area as the best site for a proposed prison. This came after reviewing selection criteria in consultation with the director of Adult Corrections Work Release, John Hefferman, and Haworth and Anderson planning firm in Spokane.

Cheney quarterback Kelly Williams threw three touchdown passes, leading the Blackhawks to a rousing come-from-behind 29-22 decision over Clarkston.

Oct. 27, 1966

The Cheney School Board approved the purchase of three properties for future use as school sites. The first was between Grove and Assembly roads, just south of Thorpe Road; another is at the corner of Murphy and Betz roads; and the third is between Salnave Road and the airstrip south of Cheney.

The first group of officers chosen to lead the student body at the newly-established Fisher Junior High School were Kelly Snapp, Kathy Fletcher, Tricia Smith, Joanne Hills and John Jordan.
