Cheney-area residents Gerry and Danette Gadberry took first place at the Pacific Giant Vegetable Growers Giant Pumpkin World Weigh Offs in Canby, Ore. with a 1,112.5-pound pumpkin.

Medical Lake City Council swore in Doug Ross, the former public works director, as an interim city administrator.

The Cheney boys cross-country team ran their Great Northern League record to 4-0 with two more wins, knocking off Medical Lake and Riverside.

Oct. 17, 1996

Veterans of Foreign Wars’ Robbie Robertson pinned a Ranger Challenge badge on Terry Wing of Eastern Washington University’s ROTC program. Wing was one of the members of EWU’s Ranger Challenge team.

Fourteen girls in Karlyn Urdahl’s third period home and family life class at Cheney High School were assigned to take home a “computer baby” for three days.

A full-service facility for licensing both drivers and vehicles was announced to be coming to the West Plains area.

Oct. 16, 1986

The Cheney City Council voted unanimously to continue cooperating with the state Department of Transportation to get a stoplight installed at the intersection of Highway 904 and Cheney-Spokane Road.

U.S. Sen. Slade Gorton was on hand at the ribbon-cutting ceremony that opened the new dorms and dining facility at Fairchild Air Force Base.

The Medical Lake Planning Commission met to further discuss the comprehensive map for the city, which included a proposal for an R.V. park.

Oct. 14, 1976

The local Citizens Advisory Committee reviewed the top five sites for a proposed state prison. All five sites were outside the Medical Lake city limits, but each was within five minutes of the town.

A Davenport man was killed and another critically injured when their single-engine airplane took a nosedive into a meadow near Drumheller Road, approximately six miles southwest of Medical Lake.

Country singer Marty Robbins came to Eastern Washington State College’s Pavilion to help the Cheney Care Center drive.

50 Years Ago

Oct. 20, 1966

The Cheney Blackhawks moved into first place in the Northeast A League with a 40-19-football victory over Chewelah. A pair of first-quarter touchdown passes from Tom Oswald to Phil Conrath helped Cheney cruise to victory.

Miss Camilla Sparks was chosen to reign over EWSC’s Homecoming activities as queen. Her princesses were Janice Stampel and Pamela Beckman.
