Turnbull hosts planting party Oct. 15

Turnbull Wildlife Refuge, Spokane Audubon Society and the Friends of Turnbull are hosting a community work party Saturday, Oct. 15, from 9 a.m. to noon at the refuge as part of celebrating National Wildlife Refuge Week. This is an ongoing effort to restore native riparian habitat that benefits area wildlife species, with volunteers planting native saplings and building fencing to protect trees.

Refuge officials ask that groups register in advance in order to assist them with planning details. Contact Sandy Rancourt at 235-4723, ext. 228, to coordinate.

The refuge will host a potluck lunch. Please feel free to bring a favorite dish.

September is National Recovery Month

During National Recovery Month, Washington State Al-Anon District 2 is sponsoring a free community information event on Monday, Sept. 26 entitled “When You Love an Alcoholic.” The event takes place from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. Spokane County Library District’s Moran Prairie Branch, 6004 S. Regal St., and is intended for the friends and families of problem drinkers, as well as for helping professionals, students and the general public.

Al-Anon is not Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and is not designed for those who have a drinking problem, but instead Al-Anon is a support group for those who are troubled by someone else’s drinking. This one-hour event will have a panel of local Al-Anon members and free Al-Anon informational pamphlets.
