The Cheney City Council gave the go-ahead for Mayor Allan Gainer to sign the Golden Hills 4th Addition final plat, which included 47 single-family houses and a city park.

Sandy and Joe O’Hagan decided to take over the Pizza Factory in Medical Lake and would make some renovations before reopening the local struggling pizza business.

Cheney School District’s board of directors approved a recommendation to increase substitute pay from $80 per day to $85 per day.

Aug. 22, 1996

The Cheney Gun Club was burglarized and had fluorescent green clay targets, boxes of Remington shells for trapshooting and cases of Pepsi-Cola stolen. The suspects appeared to know exactly what they were looking for, according to Cheney Gun Club President Chuck Booth.

The Cheney School board affirmed a $22.5 million outlay to keep the wheels of education turning in the district. The budget expenditures were up by 2.6 percent compared to the previous year.

The Airway Heights City Council ended the suspense surrounding whether or not they would vote to accept the Kalispel Indian Tribe’s proposal to build a casino by finally telling the tribe to deal them in.

Aug. 21, 1986

Cheney’s emergency crews got a workout when a bus-car crash outside of the city required 14 bus passengers to be transported to Spokane hospitals.

A group of 11 students from Cheney High School were able to see and experience Europe firsthand in a tour led by Randy Hunt, a history teacher at the high school.

Harvey Wallace, a Cheney High School agriculture teacher, was nominated to receive the Future Farmers of America Honorary American Farmer degree.

Aug. 19, 1976

Cheney Care Center collected $115,000, which was $135,000 short from their $250,000 goal for their building project.

The Washington State Grange filed a petition in Olympia to present an initiative to the 1977 State Legislature to limit irrigation water permits to family farming operations of 2,000 acres.

The Cheney Davis Club tennis team wrapped up their summer season with two lopsided court wins over a pair of Spokane opponents.

50 Years Ago

Aug. 18, 1966

Thanks to some cool weather, the wheat prospered and the average yield was near an all-time record for Cheney.

A series of reassignments had the following principals serving students in the Cheney School District: Lee Isherwood was the new principal at Windsor Elementary, William Hubbard moved to Betz Elementary, Harry Cassalman took over at Sunset Elementary, and Richard Dierkins headed both Garden Springs and Four Lakes.
