Fifth-graders score high numbers in Math is Cool competition

Elementary schools from Cheney and Medical Lake competed in the fifth-grade Math is Cool competition, March 18, at Eastern Washington University.

The competition began with a 15-minute round of mental math where each student was asked eight questions. The next round consisted of a 40-question individual test, followed by two team tests - one multiple choice and one fill in the blanks - and relays. After dinner teams competed in three rounds of College Bowl with 10 questions each.

In team scores, Hallett Elementary finished third with 97 points in Division II. Betz Elementary School took first with 76 points in Division I B and Salnave finished second with 71.

Windsor Elementary was first with 103 points in Division I A and Snowdon Elementary was fifth with 80.

In individual scores, Hallett's Riley Chiamulon was first in Division II with 50 points, and his classmate, Atlas Martin-Labrucherie, was second with 48 points. Michael Anderson Elementary's Kaleb Cain and Austin Hickey also finished in the top 10.

Betz Elementary's Mia Baldwin finished second in Division I B with 41 points. Salnave's Adam Estock was seventh with 36 and Betz's Eli Taudin-Chabot was eighth with 35.

Windsor Elementary's Teagan O'Callaghan was sixth in Division I A with 44 points. O'Callaghan's classmate Kyle Mitchell finished ninth with 42 points and Snowdon's Elizabeth Bae was 10th with 40 points.

The following students were awarded Best in School: Chiamulon, Hallett Elementary; Cain, Michael Anderson; Baldwin, Betz Elementary; Estock, Salnave Elementary; Bae, Snowdon Elementary; Giavonna Jamison, Sunset Elementary and O'Callaghan, Windsor Elementary.
