Plans for a proposed Cheney Research and Industrial Project involving the 113,000 square foot Honeywell building were being submitted to the Spokane Economic Development Council for possible grant funding.

Eastern Washington University reported they were ending the fiscal year in good shape with fall enrollment reaching yet another milestone with 10,285 students.

EWU quarterback Erik Meyer earned 333 votes to edge New Hampshire’s Ricky Santos for the Walter Payton award, which honors the Football Championship Subdivision’s top offensive player.

Dec. 21, 1995

Smoking was returning to the campus of Cheney High School for the first time in several years. When students returned to class in the new year there would be a special area set aside to smoke in a 45-day trial period.

The Medical Lake boy’s basketball team won a pair of Northeast A League games 59-52 over Freeman in which Carlos Simmons scored 22 points. He would have a 20-point night in a 59-55 victory at Newport.

Dec. 26, 1985

Cheney was in the search for a new public works director following the announcement that Dick Johnson would be moving on to a position as director of public works and construction in Snohomish, Wash.

EWU police were investigating the vandalism of a student lounge in Monroe Hall used by the school’s Gay and Lesbian Alliance.

Cathy Van Kuren scored 22 points to lead the Cheney girl’s basketball team to a 71-47 Frontier League victory.

Dec. 25, 1975

A plate glass window at Jarms Hardware on 1720 Second St. in Cheney was shattered when a 4 1/2 year-old boy was able to start his mother’s car while she was inside the store.

The Cheney School Board set Feb. 3 for a vote on a $998,000 maintenance and operations levy.

A collection of four college basketball teams, Eastern Washington, Central Washington, Whitworth and Seattle Pacific, joined by high schools teams from Cheney, Medical Lake, Brewster and Deer Park, were scheduled to play in the first Annual EWSC Christmas Classic tournament “at the all new Eastern Pavilion.”

Dec. 24, 1965

Longtime Cheney resident, Florance R. ”Cap” Morgan, who worked jobs that included everything from driving a bus route from Spokane to Cheney to serving as a captain of the Washington State Patrol, passed away in a Spokane hospital at age 65.

Sceva Construction Company from Spokane submitted the winning bid of $186,209 to build the new Woodward Field at Eastern Washington State College. The new facility was intended to replace the school’s original football field that was to be the site of the new Kennedy Library.

Led by the 19 points of Mike Liddell one night, and 25 from Bob Bartlett the next, Cheney scored a pair of basketball victories, 72-46 over Colville and 63-48 against Riverside.
