Cheney officials were denying they offered discounts for building permits. But those who built more expensive structures over $1 million found their cost at 56-cents per dollar versus 99 cents per $1 for those between $500,000 to $1 million.

Medical Lake mayoral candidate John Higgins campaigned on, among other things, the idea of improving the city’s business district.

The Cheney girl’s cross country team scored their third consecutive victory beating Gonzaga Prep 25-30 but lost to North Central 24-31 with Anna Kimball leading the team with a sixth place finish in a time of 19 minutes, 41 seconds.

Oct. 19, 1995

The Cheney School District enrolled 90 fewer students than anticipated in the 1994-1995 school year but did its best to make up for that by seeing an increase of 55 students for the new 1995-1996 term.

A contract dispute between the city of Cheney and wastewater treatment contractor IMCO was settled with a payment of $685,000 plus interest being paid to the contractor to settle arbitration in the matter.

The Cheney Blackhawks remained perfect with a 6-0 record following a 32-7 football victory over Clarkston in a Frontier League game. Richard DeMulling threw two touchdown passes and later, after switching to tight end, caught a scoring pass from Tucker Urdahl.

Oct. 24, 1985

The Cheney City Council postponed a decision whether or not to join a coalition of West Plains cities that might aid efforts to assist development of business in the area.

Eastern Washington University will continue to study ways to establish a Greek fraternity/sorority system as a way to further identify the school as “Spokane’s University,” President H. George Frederickson told students recently.

Quarterback Troy Clute scored twice and Tom Parsons rushed for 191 yards on 13 carries and scored a touchdown as Medical Lake scored a 42-12 Homecoming football victory over Colfax.

Oct. 23, 1975

Lorinda Twiss, a 1971 graduate of Eastern Washington State College, became the first female police officer hired by the city of Cheney.

Cheney City Administrator Charlie Earl announced that $500,000 in funding was in place and a construction contract ready to be awarded to Murphy Brothers Construction for a renovation project in downtown Cheney.

Oct. 22, 1965

Five residents were on the ballot for the Cheney School Board. Roy Miller, the incumbent in District 1 was challenged by Garnett Boots, while challenger Kent Sooy was hoping to unseat Ernestine Hilton in District 2. Victor Hill was running unopposed in District 5.

The second annual Eastern Days was set to kick off Oct. 25 and included competition for Miss Cheney where 11 candidates were vying for the crown.

The Cheney boy’s cross country team scored a 21-25 victory over Pullman that put them in first place in the Frontier League. The Blackhawks were led by Nobou Fukaya’s time of 14 minutes, 11 seconds and the 14:15 of Scott Andrews on the 2.5 mile course.
