Responding to a call about a burglary in progress, Medical Lake police found a suspect vehicle and engaged in a car chase that resulted in a non-injury roll-over accident.

The Starbucks coffee chain announced they would open in Cheney in the fall of 2005.

A West Plains Little League team featuring Blaine Ralph, Dennis France, Max Harris, Ronnie Miller, Logan Hennessey, Bryce Dressler, Nick Pacheco, Ryan Dixon and Zach Letch, and coached by Rob Swanson and Jason Skjothaug, advanced to state tournament play in Woodinville, Wash.

July 27, 1995

Tom Richardson, director of the Cheney Light Department, was suggesting that ratepayers could see a rate reduction as the cost of wholesale power from the Bonneville Power Administration was projected to fall 9 percent.

The Eastern Washington University board of trustees approved a $13 million contract with Shea Construction from Spokane for remodeling the Kennedy Library.

Two members of the Cheney Track Club, Ashley Pardun and Jason Miller, earned berths in the National Junior Olympics in San Diego, Calif. Pardun was to compete in the shot put, while Miller would run in the 200-meter hurdles.

July 25, 1985

The EWU academic senate voted 20-10, calling for a faculty-wide referendum in October to determine whether President H. George Frederickson should resign. The group outlined a number of reasons for the action, among them a loss of respect and credibility for the institution across a variety of areas.

The Goodyear Blimp made a rare appearance in the area as part of a special promotion for the tire maker.

July 24, 1975

The proposed Cheney Care Center’s application of need was officially turned down by the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services, putting construction of the facility in jeopardy.

An effort to rehabilitate Silver Lake by eliminating the bass population was met with heated opposition from area fisherman.

The American Legion Baseball season came to a sudden end for a pair of Cheney players, Ron and Don Huffman of the Holsum Bread team following their 5-4 loss to Seattle First National Bank in the playoffs.

July 30, 1965

Eastern Washington State College’s summer graduating class was to be the final one to use the original Woodward Field for commencement exercises in ceremonies Aug. 5. The athletic field was to be the site of the new Kennedy Library.

The Cheney City Council voted to provide maintenance for a new $260,000 road that would connect Washington Street with Betz Road and ultimately Highway 11 (now State Route 904).

Cheney’s swim team, coached by Sue Senske, earned a first place finish in the 1-meter diving competition from Tom Stone in a Junior Olympics meet in Kennewick, Wash.
