Airway Heights Let's Move looks to help residents get physical

The Airway Heights Parks and Recreation wants to help residents, as singer Olivia Newton John once put it, “Get physical” for their annual Parks and Recreation Month celebration and this time they’re doing it by taking a trip to the 1980s.

Parks and Recreation, in collaboration with the Spokane County Library District, is having a “Let’s Move” event, July 11 in the Yoke’s Fresh Market parking lot with a theme focused on the 1980s.

According to Andy Gardner, parks, recreation and community services supervisor, National Recreation and Parks Association chose the theme to honor the decade for when the National Parks and Recreation month began. NRPA started National Parks and Recreation month in 1985.

“The 1980s is fun and full of bright colors and music,” Gardner said. “Some of the staff and participating vendors will dress up in 80s gear that day.”

In 2014, the Parks Department and the library hosted a health fair at the community center as a way to promote recreational options within the city and focus on the healthier aspects of life. Although the fair was a good opportunity, Gardner said the city and the library wanted this year’s event to focus on giving attendees a chance to participate in more physical activities and “experience something.”

The event will begin with a 5K social run with the Windbreakers Run Club at 9 a.m., which Gardner said anyone can join. The city’s Youth Advisory Commission will have an inflatable obstacle course for children — dubbed the Kid’s Zone.

Airway Fitness is one of the local businesses participating with the event. Jared Nichols, Airway Fitness owner and operator, said he’ll be giving demonstrations of fitness classes that focus on aerobic exercises from the last 30 years such as Jazzercise and step aerobics, which rose to popularity in the 1980s; Turbo Kick, the fitness center’s version of cardio kickboxing that was popular in the ‘90s and Zumba, which recently rose to popularity.

“We want to show the community what we have to offer at the fitness center, but we also like to partner with Parks and Recreation and the library,” Nichols said.

Yoke’s will host juicing and cooking demonstrations to show residents how they can make healthy snacks for the summer. Gardner added that other businesses and organizations will be participating at the event.

“The goal is to offer something, rather than just have people go from table-to-table, get some free stuff and go,” Gardner said.
