Cheney woman escapes injury in Interstate 90 collision

A Cheney woman escaped potential injury in a collision last Friday involving two semi trucks on Interstate 90 not far from the Cheney-Four Lakes exit.

According to the Washington State Patrol, at just after midnight a 2007 Freightliner driven by Timothy Akers of Arlington, Wash., left the roadway in the westbound lanes and lost control. The trailer of Akers truck struck the trailer of a 2009 International driven by Binyam M. Wondmagegnehu of Calgary, Alberta before rolling over and coming to rest in the highway median, spilling the contents of the trailer.

Debris from the Freightliner also struck a 2012 Honda Coupe driven by Delores J. Shack of Cheney, who was also westbound. None of the drivers were injured and both Shack and Wondmagegnehu were able to drive their vehicles from the scene.

Both lanes of I-90 westbound were blocked, with one lane eventually opened around 9:30 a.m. Friday morning. The highway was completely open by noon.

The State Patrol cited Akers for negligent driving. The accident also had a windfall for cats at the Spokane County Regional Animal Protection Service (SCRAPS).

According to a SCRAPS news release, the towing company tasked with removing Akers’ rig contacted the organization as they were beginning to clean up the interstate and told them some of the debris consisted of high quality canned cat food and grain free pate.

SCRAPS staff, volunteers and some helpful citizens quickly responded and were able to salvage hundreds of cans and boxes of cat food.
